“iBooks” are no longer old Apple laptops made out of white plastic, nor are they simply e-books to be purchased within Apple’s iBookstore. Apple announced what it’s calling “iBooks 2″ during its media event in New York on Thursday, a textbook software program that allows textbook-makers and instructors to create rich, interactive teaching media for the iPad. As we first reported earlier this week, the announcement is akin to “GarageBand for e-books,” giving authors access to easy-to-use tools on the computer in order to create multimedia content for the iPad.

Books created for iBooks 2 can have all manner of media attached, complete with multitouch capabilities. The company listed numerous ways in which iBooks 2 authors can create engaging content for students, including multiple-choice questions with immediate feedback within the text, the ability to make notes and highlights that can be found in a single location as note cards or sprinkled throughout the text, ways to explore embedded graphics and 3D animations, full-motion movies, and more.

iBooks 2 itself is an app for the iPad, but books for the application can be found within the already existing iBookstore under a new “textbook” category, with free samples available to those who want to try out the books first. Students can use codes to redeem them for books and can re-download them whenever they need to.

But how does one create a textbook for iBooks 2? Apple also announced a Mac application on Thursday called “iBooks Author,” which Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller described as “powerful and feature-rich.” The interface, as demoed to the audience, is similar to Apple’s iWork applications and allows authors to format books through WYSIWYG interaction and format the pages in a variety of ways. (It’s worth noting that news broke on Wednesday that Apple had commandeered its VP of productivity applications Roger Rosne to head up this project.)

In addition to the WYSIWYG interface, authors can further customize their books with HTML5 or JavaScript, and the application provides live previews so that authors can see what the final result will be before publishing. The price of the books is capped at $14.99 or less (the company specifically said “high school” books, so it’s unclear as to whether the cap applies to all books), though instructors can sell individual chapters at what Schiller described as a “very aggressive price.”

“If you’ve ever been involved with creating e-books before, you know this is a total miracle in terms of time savings,” Apple told the audience in NYC.

But that’s not all! Apple brought out its Senior VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue to discuss a new iTunes U app for iPad. The app will allow college and university students to download full courses from Apple’s iTunes U section on iTunes and view them in an easy-to-use manner. The app lets students navigate through a course overview and outline, and professors can customize their course offerings by adding office hours and credits as well. Instructors can post notes that get sent to students’ iPads and even make assignments through the app.

Like the offerings through iBooks 2, the iTunes U app allows for materials beyond the usual, boring college texts. Instructors can add things like audio, various documents (such as Keynote presentations or PDFs), and even other apps for students to use. Cue pointed out that numerous universities are already using iTunes U, such as UCLA, UC Berkeley, and University of Paris. Up to this point, however, K-12 schools have been excluded from iTunes U, but Cue said that was changing on Thursday, with the company allowing K-12 institutions to create iTunes U offerings as well.

All three of the apps discussed in Thursday’s announcement—iBooks 2, iBooks Author, and iTunes U—are free to download from their respective app stores. Apple clearly wants to make the effort accessible to everyone, including instructors, though we have no doubt the company plans to charge its usual 30 percent fee for the sales of books and other educational materials through the iBookstore and iTunes U.

When labor costs so little, there’s no reason to build anything other than by hand.

The official work day in China is 8 hours long, but the standard shift is 12 hours. Generally, these shifts extend to 14-16 hours, especially when there’s a hot new gadget to build. While Daisey is in Shenzhen, a Foxconn worker dies after working a 34-hour shift.

In a 12-by-12 cement cube of a room, Daisey counts 15 beds, stacked like drawers up to the ceiling. Normal-sized Americans would not fit in them.

Unions are illegal in China. One group talked about using “hexane,” an iPhone screen cleaner. Hexane evaporates faster than other screen cleaners, which allows the production line to go faster. Hexane is also a neuro-toxin. The hands of the workers who tell him about it shake uncontrollably.

Some workers can no longer work because their hands have been destroyed by doing the same thing hundreds of thousands of times over many years (mega-carpal-tunnel). This could have been avoided if the workers had merely shifted jobs. Once the workers’ hands no longer work, obviously, they’re canned.

One former worker had asked her company to pay her overtime, and when her company refused, she went to the labor board. The labor board put her on a black list that was circulated to every company in the area. The workers on the black list are branded “troublemakers” and companies won’t hire them.

Foxconn did not give him medical attention. When the man’s hand healed, it no longer worked. So they fired him. (Fortunately, the man was able to get a new job, at a wood-working plant. The hours are much better there, he says — only 70 hours a week).

The man, by the way, made the metal casings of iPads at Foxconn. Daisey showed him his iPad. The man had never seen one before. He held it and played with it. He said it was “magic.”

Importantly, Shenzhen’s factories, as hellish as they are, have been a boon to the people of China. Liberal economist Paul Krugman says so. NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof says so. Kristof’s wife’s ancestors are from a village near Shenzhen. So he knows of what he speaks. The “grimness” of the factories, Kristof says, is actually better than the “grimness” of the rice paddies.

So, looked at that way, Apple is helping funnel money from rich American and European consumers to poor workers in China. Without Foxconn and other assembly plants, Chinese workers might still be working in rice paddies, making $50 a month instead of $250 a month (Kristof’s estimates. In 2010, Reuters says, Foxconn workers weregiven a raise to $298 per month, or $10 a day, or less than $1 an hour). With this money, they’re doing considerably better than they once were. Especially women, who had few other alternatives.

But, of course, the reason Apple assembles iPhones and iPads in China instead of America, is that assembling them here or Europe would cost much, much more — even with shipping and transportation. And it would cost much, much more because, in the United States and Europe, we have established minimum acceptable standards for the treatment and pay of workers like those who build the iPhones and iPads.

Foxconn, needless to say, doesn’t come anywhere near meeting these minimum standards.

But they might not be all that awful, either. Unlike some electronics manufacturers, Apple’s profit margins are so high that they could go down a lot and still be high. And some Americans would presumably feel better about loving their iPhones and iPads if they knew that the products had been built using American labor rules.

In other words, Apple could probably afford to use American labor rules when building iPhones and iPads without destroying its business.

(Not that Apple is the only company choosing to avoid American labor rules and costs, of course — almost all manufacturing companies that want to survive, let alone thrive, have to reduce production costs and standards by making their products elsewhere.)

The bottom line is that iPhones and iPads cost what they do because they are built using labor practices that would be illegal in this country — because people in this country consider those practices grossly unfair.

That’s not a value judgment. It’s a fact.

Users will get access to well-known and heavily used programs usually reserved for desktop computers like Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

OnLive Desktop is basically a remote desktop app, which means you’ll be accessing your own computer remotely from your iPad. The difference is, OnLive promises to make more features available than other remote desktop apps. You’ll be able to watch videos, access media and even play PC games, OnLive says. Basically, OnLive Desktop will make your iPad an extension of your PC. It’ll also feature input features like handwriting recognition, multi-touch capabilities and an on-screen keyboard, and uses cloud storage to save documents and make them available across multiple devices.

That’s a pretty big expansion on OnLive’s current core business, which is making PC games available over the Internet via a streaming service. That system works well: even if you don’t have the hardware to play some top-tier video games, OnLive’s service makes it possible to play them on your machine anyway. The company also recently released an Android app that makes that same capability possible on mobile devices, bringing full, quality video games normally reserved for consoles and PCs to mobile devices through the power of the Internet. An iPad version has been in the works for some time, but is not yet available, possibly because of complications getting it approved by Apple.

With the expansion to OnLive Desktop, it seems OnLive is setting its sights on becoming a company that offers business services and more practical apps, rather than just those related to gaming. It also has another business-related app, OnLive Enterprise, in the works. If the company can make OnLive Desktop work as well as its Android streaming gaming app does currently, that could be very good news for iPad owners who’d like to be able to use the device as a work tool on the go.

OnLive Desktop will come with 2 gigabytes of cloud storage space, and there will also be a premium storage plan of 50GB for $9.99 per month. The app is expected to be released Thursday, provided there are no issues with getting it approved, as there are with OnLive’s other streaming app.
